Daguerreotype Hallmarks

This page is a sample only. (The finished page will content more data. If I have time...) The aim of this project to collect more dates about hallmarks as a free interactive place to support research. Any person can update this by send an email for me. In the SOURCE column each contributor will be designated by an index number or mark providing a link to the contributing person/organization's data in a separate list.

This page started at 2004, but there was no too much sucess about contribution from others, so it is basicly my own product recently...

Original size of the colour pictures in the table is much larger so in a new window You can see better. The B&W pictures old, low quality copys, so I wish to change them if I find a better one.

Thanks to  Ms Anne Gros from Christofle Co. for the following information:
This mark is the Christofle's master mark used between 1845 and 1862.   CC  for Christofle et Compagnie, the scale to evoke the rightness of our production.  The scale is used at least since the middle age in Europe as a symbol for the silversmith.

The PLATE column will be the place of the data of each piece what contents of that
hallmark, in my database or other base, eg.: size (1/1 = whole plate 1/2 = halfplate
and so on) and/or date of the photo if it known...

Special Hallmarks

Silver Content Marks:
Eg.: 40 or M40 In this case the 1/40 part of the whole weight (mass) of the plate is silver.
In the main age of the daguerreotype the most used plate type was the 40.
About the special literature that silver layer was thick enough to use  the plate 2-3
times. (Bad or unnecessary pictures were removed by
polishing before resensitisation. The number of reusability is up to the
evenness and smoothness of the layers. The overexposed/"developed"
picture is often unremovable at the highlights.)
The range was: 10-60 but usually 20, 30 or 40, others are rarities.
This type of signs usually where on French made plates because it was
prescripted by a law in that country, but there are sometimes eg. on the USA produced plates also.

There are a few words on the plate wich is not the name of the plate maker: doublé, breveté and garanti(e) these are on French plates.

Doublé:  The name of materials where a base metal was covered with a precious metal (different from a full precious metal materials).  In this case a silver plated/covered copper plate.

Garanti(e): something like guaranted quality

Breveté: patented

For the plated metal, the hallmarks are either square shape or rectangular shape. This is the end
eighteenth century that the process of plated metal will rependre (re-hanged?). Created in 1797,
the punch of metal plated was used regularly until 1860.
 square punch comprises:

******

The balance was in Europe the symbol for the silversmith.

The moon was the symbol of the silver for the alchemists.

(Description/decoding of other signs: rosette, etc.coming later.)
